Place Manager - Aboriginal Engagement

Position overview

This is a full-time, ongoing position based in Bairnsdale. 

The role will aid and support to residents and communities across East Gippsland to respond to issues and opportunities in a timely and outcome focused manner. Its focus is to give the Aboriginal community greater confidence and trust to engage with Council, and to help stimulate consideration of the needs of the local Aboriginal community across all areas of Council.

What you will need to succeed 

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent and have a sound knowledge of East Gippsland Aboriginal culture and current issues affecting local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
  • A well-developed understanding of Community Development principles and models, including place and strength- based approaches and asset-based community development.
  • Flexible communication skills and demonstrated ability to build rapport with a wide range of people and develop collaborative partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across East Gippsland.
  • The ability to produce written documents including reports and correspondence.
  • An understanding of social and community issues that impact the specific communities across East Gippsland.
  • Understanding of the role of local government.
  • An ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders.  
  • A current, valid Victorian driver’s licence and Employee Working with Children Check.                                                                                   

This is an Aboriginal Designated Position, classified under ‘special measures’ of section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic).  Only Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people are eligible to apply. 

The successful applicant will be required to undertake a current Police Check and Employee Working with Children Check.
